Two Japanese Kutani earthenware plates, Meiji (1868-1912), one depicting a figure kneeling before a Bijin, against a gilded terracotta ground, marked with characters verso, 37.5cm diameter; the other decorated with panels of figures in a landscape, in similar colours, inscribed verso, 35cm diameter

The larger plate has some brown staining at the feet of the standing bijin, this can be removed by gentle scraping, there is a little staining elsewhere within the crazing,noticeable within the sky area.It is evident that the plate has been used as a saucer for a plant pot.
Overall the gilding is good and there are no chips or cracks.
the smaller plate also has some brown staining within the crazing most noticeable within the figures in the lower part of the plate. A ring of wear is evident around the centre of the plate. There are no chips, cracks or restoration.
